'To know you was to love you': Mother of Brampton shooting victim Kadeem Bascombe speaks out
'I know you will always be watching out for us. You will always be in our hearts.'
The mother of a 24-year-old Mississauga man shot at the scene of a Brampton bar on Friday says Kadeem Bascombe had a smile that could light up a room.
"Kadeem, You are not only my son, but also my protector and friend," Bascombe's mother, Lois Williamson, wrote in a statement emailed to CBC News Sunday.
"You have a smile that lights a room and you have always been a kind and giving person," the statement continues. "I have been truly blessed to be your mother. To know you was to love you, and we all do."
CBC News spoke with Bascombe's sister, Qadiraa Stephen, on Sunday, who said his entire family is grieving. Stephen also confirmed a Facebook account belonging to her brother and provided the following photos.
"Although you are no longer here in the physical [form], I truly know that you have not and will never leave us," Williamson wrote.
"I know you will always be watching out for us. You will always be in our hearts."
Const. Rachel Gibbs, with the Peel Regional Police, said they received several calls about gunshots near Lisa Street and Dixie Road Friday night at 9 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, the parking of an All Stars Bar and Grill, they found the victim in critical condition.
Supt. Steve Walker from Peel paramedics told CBC News Friday evening that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
On Saturday, police appealed to the public for help with the investigation, hoping to speak to any witnesses who were in the area of Dixie Road and Queen Street East in Brampton at the time of the shooting.
On Sunday afternoon, a friend set up a GoFundMe page to help Bascombe's family with costs.
"I'm asking anyone out there that wants to help the family through this tough time please do so and donate anything you can. #stopgunviolence," the friend wrote.
