Police seek 2 suspects after man killed in shooting near Yonge and Eglinton
'Toronto is a safe city,' police say after fatal daytime shooting in midtown
Toronto police say they are looking for two male suspects after a man was shot to death in a vehicle in an alley near a major intersection in midtown Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We're all shocked by this, but what I can say to the area residents, Toronto is a safe city," Supt. Reuben Stroble told reporters near the crime scene.
"The public should feel safe. We are doing everything in our power to keep the public safe. We're increasing our patrols. We are in the community, in the neighbourhoods, where we should be. This area is a very quiet neighbourhood.
For us, this is a big surprise for this area, especially at this time of day.- Supt. Reuben Stroble, Toronto Police Service
"For us, this is a big surprise for this area, especially at this time of day."
Stroble said he could not confirm how many shots were fired and whether the man was targeted, but said the front of the vehicle was damaged by bullets and it appears the man was alone at the time.
Officers are canvassing a nearby apartment building for witnesses and for security camera video.
Stroble urged those responsible to surrender to police and to get a lawyer.
"We will find out who you are and you will be arrested," he said. "The trail will lead to them and we will apprehend them."
Police said in a tweet that two men were seen fleeing from the area in a black car. Police said both were wearing construction vests, one green, one orange.
A construction worker nearby said he heard about a dozen shots.
