13 impaired drivers arrested over weekend in York Region, police say

York Regional Police say motorists "simply aren't getting the message" after officers arrested another 13 impaired drivers this weekend.

Const. Andy Pattenden called it "another disappointing weekend" in the region.

Police arrested six people while conducting R.I.D.E. checks, five as a result of concerned citizens calling 9-1-1 and another two after responding to collisions between April 8 and 10.

No injuries were reported in any of the 13 cases.

In a news release, police mention one particular incident from Sunday just after 9 p.m., where a driver ended up going south in the northbound lane of Leslie St., narrowly missing a collision with another vehicle. The driver didn't respond to emergency lights, and eventually had to be boxed in. 

They identified the driver as a 58-year-old Toronto woman with alcohol readings more than twice the legal limit.

"Impaired driving is the number one criminal cause of death in Canada," York police said in the release. "When you drink or use drugs and drive you not only risk your life and those of your passengers, but the lives of every other driver and pedestrian on the road."

Police continue to encourage drivers to use a designated driver, book accommodations or use a cab or public transit if they plan to drink.
