The Great Canadian Flag Project is $150,000 closer to completion after obtaining a grant from the federal government.

The group behind the project made the announcement at the riverfront in downtown Windsor on Wednesday.

In 2013, when the project was first proposed, organizers said it would cost $250,000.

In a unanimous decision last year, city council approved plans to install an 18-metre wide Canadian flag along Windsor's riverfront in Dieppe Park.

The city agreed to set aside $25,000 for the project. An additional $300,000 will come through fundraising for the pole and maintenance costs.

The funding announced Wednesday comes from the federal governments Canada 150 Fund.
