Healthy food to be sold at Adventure Bay, alcohol not on the menu

In deciding to exclude alcohol sales as part of the contract, staff measured risk factors, attendance and future growth.

A private company will be hired to serve healthy food options at Adventure Bay, but alcohol will not be on the menu— at least not yet.

Windsor city council approved a proposal recommending CGC Concessions Group be granted a three-year contract during their meeting Monday.

The company has agreed to offer all current concessions employees a job and to provide a menu that includes options "high in fibre, vitamins and minerals and lower in fat, sugar and sodium."

It will pay the city a total of $139,313.37 over the three years, according to a  report prepared before the meeting.

As for the controversial alcohol option, the city's executive director of recreation and culture Jan Wilson, said selling booze at the downtown water park was not worth the risk.

"We find that the water park is actually getting busier, and the space needs that would be required to carve out a section for the alcohol might actually impede the flow of traffic throughout, so we felt it best to focus on a really good service, good menu options and proceed from there," she explained.

The decision comes after city councillors and the mayor debated offering alcohol at the park back in September with some, including Ward 7 Coun. Irek Kusmierczyk, suggesting selling it would drive away families. Others, including Mayor Drew Dilkens, said booze would do the opposite.

The new deal does allow the city to revisit the option of serving alcohol in the future.
