Director Jean-Marc Vallée has been making movies for years, but when screenwriter Bryan Sipe's script for Demolition crossed his path, he was blown away.
"It was so unpredictable," the Quebec filmmaker told CBC News.
"It was so funny, surprising, shocking, provocative, edgy — and yet deeply moving."
Demolition, which opened the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in September, tells the story of a grieving investment banker named Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal), who attempts to rebuild his life after a tragic loss.
The cast of the comedic drama also includes Naomi Watts, Judah Lewis and Chris Cooper.
In the video above, Vallée talks about why Demolition surprised him and why Gyllenhaal was perfect to play Davis.
