Media to honour slain Pakistani reporter

A Pakistani journalist who was abducted and killed is one of three reporters to be honoured by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression at a ceremonyon Wednesday.

The late investigative journalist Hayat Ullah Khan was given a special Honourary Press Freedom award in recognition of his work reporting as a freelance tribal reporter in Pakistan. Khan was abducted on Dec. 5, 2005 and his body was found with bullet holes in it this past June 16.

The CJFE normally gives out only two International Press Freedom Awards a year but made an exception this year to include Khan.

The other two reporters to receive the award are Columbian documentary filmmaker Holland Morris and Egyptian journalist Abeer Al-Askary.

The ninth annual event will be hosted by Wendy Mesley and will feature keynote speaker Paul Heinbecker, from Wilfrid Laurier University, as well as exiled Iranian journalist Maryam Aghvami.
