'Flat Stomach Concept Extra' kit recalled
Mix of diuretics and laxatives could cause serious health problems
A natural health product that claims to flatten the stomach, and firm the thighs and hips is being recalled from Canada because it violated the conditions of its market authorization and could cause serious health risks.
However, Health Canada said the company in its marketing and packaging failed to tell consumers that prolonged use of the product could lead to serious health problems, even death.
Among the conditions it placed on the company was a condition that consumers be warned to consult a health-care practitioner if they planned to use the Flat Stomach Concept kit for more than five days.
According to Health Canada, the product contains stimulant laxatives that should not be taken for more than one or two weeks, unless the user is under medical supervision.
Prolonged use of the product could irreversibly damage the intestines, and disturb electrolyte imbalances leading to irregular heartbeats, muscle weakness, kidney failure or death, according to the public health agency.
The product also contains diuretics, which could create further problems with blood electrolyte levels.
Les Produits Naturels Leblanc makes considerable health claims for its product based on a "clinical study." However, a Montreal firm that says it specializes in giving companies precisely the results they are looking for performed that study.
Spincontrol states on its website that it "specialises in proving the claims of any cosmetic product, aesthetic products, and medical devices."
It says it does this by "using 'tailor-made' protocols from the most standard to the most original."
