German airline Lufthansa has announced that most of its 1,700 scheduled flights on Monday have been cancelled.

The international airline posted a statement on its website Sunday warning passengers that it's only running 30 flights after ground staff called a one-day strike.

The statement says a few select short-haul flights within Germany will go ahead Monday.

Lufthansa rejected union demands last week for a 5.2-per-cent salary bump over the next 12 months. The union is also seeking guarantees concerning job cuts.

Last month, there was a similar one-day walkout.

The airline said it "regrets any inconvenience to Lufthansa passengers" and will do "its utmost to minimize impacts on passengers."

Passengers are asked to check the status of their flights — including ones slated to depart on Sunday night.

Flights on its Germanwings low-cost airline will not be affected.
