'Controversial' is not a label American photographer Sally Mann ever expected to be associated with her work. But the label has stuck -- even more than two decades after the publication of her book Immediate Family, which featured nude images of her young children.

In her new memoir Hold Still, Sally Mann reflects on the unexpected consequences of making her family a part of her art. She also seeks to an unravel her own family history which, in her words, includes a "payload of southern gothic: deceit and scandal, alcoholism...car crashes...clandestine affairs...and maybe even bloody murder."

Sally Mann joined As It Happens host Carol Off for a feature interview about her work and life.
