Should pets be considered more like people under the law?

People have been living with dogs and cats for thousands of years. Over that time our relationship with our pets has evolved to the point where some think of them as members of the family rather than possessions. Although animals sometimes get rights and privileges akin to human beings, they are still seen as property under law. Brent spoke to Science Magazine editor David Grimm about his new book Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs and the tension surrounding how we see pets under the law.
