'Clothes Off' singer Ria Mae dares to bare her pop heart
Ria Mae says she's always felt like a bit of an oddball in the folk world. Still, the Halifax artist had to push herself to break from the singer-songwriter scene to make the electro-pop music she loves.
Her new sound stuck. Her self-titled second album — and the big hit Clothes Off — attracted a big backer in Sony Music, and got her nominated for a Juno alongside heavyweights like Drake, Justin Bieber, and The Weeknd.
In the lead up to her album launch on Friday, she joins guest host Gill Deacon to share the laundry room moment that changed everything, the internal pressure she feels when featuring lesbian love in pop, and why she stops reading YouTube comments past a certain view count.
"The music's not for people that don't like it. The music is for people that it's affecting positively," she says.
