Mike Carey on his zombie coming-of-age film, The Girl With all the Gifts
Mike Carey is one of the U.K.'s most prolific comic book writers. He is the ongoing writer of X-Men: Legacy for Marvel Comics, and famously adapted Neil Gaiman's book The Sandman into the incredibly popular Lucifer DC comic.
Carey's latest project is the adaptation of his thriller, The Girl With all the Gifts, turning the zombie genre on its head by making the film's central zombie character the heroine of the story and someone the audience can identify with in a human way.
"The fear presented in the movie most powerfully is her fear," he explains. "Fear of what she is, her own nature."
It's a zombie coming-of-age film that, among many other themes, touches on the "fear of mistrust between the generations," as well as fear of outsiders. It's a timely subject, Carey adds, drawing comparisons to Brexit and Donald Trump's travel ban.
The Girl With all the Gifts hits theatres Friday, Feb. 24.
