It's become one of the most beloved stories in Canada- for children and adults. "The Hockey Sweater" is about hockey and winter and a child's longing to fit in and be part of the team, and it has a great twist in it that is by turn painful and very funny. In the celebrated tale, Roch Carrier describes his childhood obsession with the Montreal Canadiens and Maurice "Rocket" Richard in particular.

Austin Clarke's Harlem Part One
A little more than fifty years ago, 1963, was a time of great upheaval in the United States. The fight for civil rights was in full force with people like Martin Luther King Jr., Stokeley Carmichael and Malcolm X making headlines. During this historic time, CBC Radio commissioned a young writer called Austin Clarke to make a documentary. He travelled to Harlem to find out what living conditions were like for the African-Americans who lived there. In later years Clarke would go on to become a celebrated author, whose novel The Polished Hoe won the Giller Prize in 2002. But in 1963, he was a young freelancer with a microphone and a notebook. The results were powerful.

Elie Wiesel and Wayson Choy
The two pieces on Rewind today feature writers who have accomplished much in their lives- overcoming formidable odds to achieve success.
The first is Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel was still a teenager when he was liberated from the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945. Having lost his mother and father, and yet to be reunited with two sisters, he went to an orphanage in France, where he picked up the language that would stay with him. Fifty years later, Wiesel - whose experiences in Auschwitz became his 1960 memoir Night - still writes in French. In this 1997 conversation on CBC Radio's Writers and Company, Wiesel says he appreciates the rigour French imposes on his writing.
His novel Night has sold well over 10 million copies, a remarkable turnaround for a book that more than 15 publishers rejected in the 1950s. Night was not the first book to describe the Jewish experience during the Second World War - The Diary of Anne Frank came out in 1952 - but it was the first to describe the horrors of living in a concentration camp. "Where Anne Frank's book ends," Wiesel told the New York Times in 2008, "mine begins."
After that, Wayson Choy, the Chinese Canadian writer with his novel the Jade Peony, which he calls a tale of survival. It tells the story of Vancouver's Chinese population in the 1930s and '40s. The interview on Rewind is from the program The Arts Tonight in 1996.

Presidents Come to Canada
Until about 100 years ago, American presidents never travelled much outside the U.S. That all changed in 1919 when Woodrow Wilson attended the Paris Peace Conference that set out the terms for ending the First World War. After that the stage was set for presidents to go beyond their own borders. Canada has always been a popular destination. In fact, it's now become a tradition that the first foreign visit by a U.S. President should be to our country. Rewind presents a portrait of presidential visits to Canada.

Irving Layton
An interview with Irving Layton, one of Canada's greatest poets of the twentieth century. Layton grew up in a poor Montreal neighbourhood around St. Urbain Street -- the same stomping grounds as novelist Mordecai Richler. His first career was as a high school teacher and then an English professor. His students included Leonard Cohen. They formed a lasting friendship. Cohen once said of Layton, "I taught him how to dress, and he taught me how to live forever." In all, Layton published more than 40 books of poetry and prose in a career that spanned more than five decades. Never modest, he once claimed that, "I am a genius who has written poems that will survive the best of Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Keats." You'll hear his legendary swaggering confidence in this interview with Vicki Gabereau. It's a wonderful conversation full of opinion and stories. Layton talks about Leonard Cohen, his vehement dislike of his biography, and why he's impressed with someone who comes to the conclusion that 2 + 2 = 5. It first aired in December 2nd, 1985.

Hurricane Hazel
On October 15, 1954, one of the deadliest hurricanes of the 20th century struck Southern Ontario. It was called Hurricane Hazel, and by the time it reached Toronto, had already caused hundreds of deaths in its wake and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Forecasters had predicted that the intensity of the storm would lessen as it came inland, but this proved not to be the case. In Toronto winds reached 150 kilometre per hour and dumped more than 200 millimetres (about eight inches) of rain in less than 24 hours. Bridges and streets were washed out and homes and trailers were swept into Lake Ontario. Thousands were left homeless, and 81 people were killed - 35 of them on one street alone.
A documentary from the program Project 59 that looks back five years to the events of that fall, 1954.
Feb 16
Ray Bradbury
A feature interview with Ray Bradbury. He is not only one of America's most popular science fiction writers, but perhaps the only author who has both a star on Hollywood Boulevard and an asteroid named after him. Not bad for a guy who never made it through college.
In all, Bradbury has written more than five hundred works -- short stories, novels, plays, screenplays, television scripts, you name it. Fahrenheit 451, perhaps his best-known novel, has sold more than five million copies over the past fifty-some years. The book tells of a hedonistic anti-intellectual America in which books are illegal. Like all good speculative fiction, its themes become more resonant with the passing of time. So far he's two out of three.
The interview with Mr. Bradbury on this show is with Vicki Gabereau from 1985. The interview was ostensibly to promote his latest book, "Death is a Lonely Business" but the conversation strays far and wide.

Something to Say: Black Comics
From September 1969, an hour with three black comics. It was time when change was in the air not only in music, politics and race relations, but also in comedy. Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx were starting to make their mark on humour, crossing racial barriers in the process.
This program is from the series Something to Say, and it features three comedians- first Redd Foxx, and then two relative newcomers- Stu Gilliam and Godfrey Cambridge. One note- some language that was common in 1969 sounds dated to our ears.
Feb 13
Radio Canada International
When it was first established in February 1945, the CBC International Service was intended for broadcast to Canadian Forces overseas. On this show Rewind looks back on RCI's six and a half decades of shortwave radio.

And yet some things are different now too. There's hardly a mention of online journalism, let alone social media, which newspapers have wholeheartedly embraced. An episode from the Project series- this one from Project 59. It first aired in November 1958. This episode plays with sound and is a sort of imagining of the sounds of the earth- from fire and water, to animals and the farm, to life in the city.
It's called Hear and Wonder and it's almost a trippy barrage of sounds. And as Keith Hart, one of the archivists in Radio Archives put it, listening to it reminds us that the 1950s were still psychologically mired in war- the sounds in this hour are martial in character and sometimes the effect can be gloomy and tiresome. However, I don't think you'll find the hour gloomy and tiresome- let yourself get swept up in Hear and Wonder from 1958.

Stuart McLean Part Two
Stuart McLean began telling stories on CBC Radio back in 1979, making documentaries for Sunday Morning. He won an ACTRA award for his documentary on the Jonestown Massacre.
But for some reason, Stuart McLean decided that he wasn't cut out for the hard news. In 1984, he became a regular columnist on Morningside with Peter Gzowski.
McLean's appearances had a specific formula. He would sit down with Peter Gzowski and bring two gifts: a story and some tape. He would tell Peter his tale and play bits of interviews he'd gathered in the field. In radio parlance, this was known as a tape-talk. And it was a format invented by Stuart McLean. He was the first and many would argue the best at it. McLean with the help of his tape recorder would bring stories of everyday life from all corners of Canada. On this show we have three of them to share with you.
The first is from April 1987. Stuart McLean had visited a flower auction on the outskirts of Toronto. It's a place where hundreds of flower growers and sellers converge in a big warehouse very early in the morning and perform an intricate ritual to buy and sell their wares.
In classic Stuart McLean style, it illustrates the remarkable in the everyday.

Court of Opinions
Court of Opinions, a CBC Radio program that first aired in 1956.
It was a series that ran first on CBC radio and then television in the 1950s and 60s. Listeners wrote in questions and a panel of guests and regular contributors tried to answer them. The topics were eclectic- everything from "Should lectures on sex be given in public schools?" to "If you were to enter fairyland, what story-book character would you like to be?"
Or how's this: "What do you predict for 1957?" The suggestions for that one were that "pointy rears" on cars will be abolished by law, that colour TV would become popular, that Louis St. Laurent would win a majority in the next election, and that Elvis Presley would decline in popularity.
In this sample, from February 1956, the guest was the famous Canadian actor Lorne Greene.

The Rise of Advertising
The Rise of Advertising from the Mad Men era. That television series portrays the world of advertisers as sexy, manipulative and fascinating, complete with great characters and clothes, catchy jingles and writing. Ads are so much a part of our lives now- slapped on every surface and as background to every experience- that much of the time we've learned to tune it out. But there have always been people who worry about its insidious power to shape and influence the unsuspecting public- whether it's through ear worms that lodge themselves in your brain, subliminal ads that find sex in every ice cube or a robot like response that forces you to buy buy buy.

This Country in the Morning: Peter Cook, Dudley Moore
Michael Enright's first job at the CBC Radio network was hosting a program called This Country in the Morning. It was the fall of 1974 and he followed Peter Gzowski, who had hosted the program for three years. Michael only did it for one season, but during that time, he says he had a lot of fun. Today two interviews from that year. The first is with two of the funniest British comics of the 60s and 70s- Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. They first met in a wildly successful act called Beyond the Fringe, and then forged a relationship taking their comedy act to television and on the road. When Michael talked to them in March 1975, they had been touring their show Good Evening for three years.
After that, an interview with George Cohon, who in December 1974 when Michael talked to him, was the president of McDonald's Canada.

Matthew Halton
For Remambrance Day, a look back at one of Canada's most illustrious war correspondents- a man who made the Second World War come alive for millions of radio listeners- Matthew Halton.
He started every report with the words: "This is Matthew Halton of the CBC." His reports were at times tender and sad and other times shocking and explosive. Halton was an unabashed sentimentalist who covered the war as a crusade, for which he was sometimes criticized but more often loved. Covering the major milestones of his generation - from the war trenches to the coronation of the Queen, Halton became Canada's most famous foreign correspondent. A thoughtful philosopher and determined idealist, Matthew Halton was an everyman poet who wore his heart boldly on his sleeve.

Bombardier- The Birth of the Ski-Doo
The birth of the ski-doo. Its inventor's name was Joseph-Armand Bombardier, a shy and determined mechanic who dreamed of building a vehicle that could "float on snow." In 1937 the first snowmobile rolled out of his small repair shop in Valcourt, Quebec.
The Ski-Doo became an instant hit but not for the reasons imagined by M. Bombardier. He originally called it a "ski-dog" because he intended it as a practical vehicle, which could replace the dogsled for hunters and trappers. A typographical error in a Bombardier brochure changed the name Ski-Dog to Ski-Doo. Armand liked the sound of the erroneous name and kept it. Hear more on this edition of Rewind.

It has been hailed as Richler's finest work. Here about that and more on this show.

Mordecai Richler- Part Two
The second of three programs about Mordecai Richler- the brash, hugely talented and prolific Montreal writer.
Last time on the program, it was about his early days, his self imposed exile from Canada and his return to Montreal, as well as his early and ongoing literary success. And underscoring it all was his willingness to be contrary and opinionated. This time, the middle years, including a children's book that ended up being one of his best sellers. It was called Jacob Two-Two and the Hooded Fang, and told the story of a boy called Jacob (in real life also the name of one of Richler's children) who befriends the Hooded Fang, an ex wrestler.

Mordecai Richler- Part One
The first of three programs about the writer Mordecai Richler. Barney's Version, both the movie and the book on which it is based, is vintage Richler- brash, politically incorrect, blunt and a pretty accurate description of the man and his writing.
Richler was born in Montreal to a poor Jewish family, but by age 19 was eager to taste the world. When he left Canada for Paris, he was a brooding young intellectual with lots to say. He later moved to England and by the time he returned to Montreal in the mid 1970s, he was a respected writer with a keen eye for the absurd and the magnetism to charm... or... anger just about everyone who met or read him. From Montreal's Jewish ghetto to Quebec nationalism, from boring Anglophones to hypocritical politicians - the incomparable Richler commented, questioned, laughed and angered.

Catholics Part Three
The third of a four part series about the Roman Catholic Church. It first aired on Ideas in the spring of 1984. It was a time when the church was experiencing great change. The ideas that came out of the Second Vatican Council- of liberalization and accessibility felt like a breath of fresh air to many. And when Karol Woytala became Pope John Paul the Second in 1978, his personal charisma won many over. It seemed like there would be all sorts of changes that would continue in the coming years. Of course this was before Catholic priests around the world were charged and often convicted of crimes against children including assault and rape.
From May 1984, the third part of an Ideas series about the Catholic Church. Today, the church in Quebec. The episode is called From Prince to Servant.

Catholics Part One
The first of four programs about Catholics.
It's a series that first aired in the spring of 1984 on the program Ideas. It was prepared and presented by Michael Higgins, a Roman Catholic scholar and writer who has worked at several universities and also prepared more than 60 programs for CBC Radio. This series examined the changing role of the Catholic Church in social, economic and international affairs. Since the revolutionary Vatican Two Council of the mid 1960s, the Roman Catholic Church had been undergoing a public process of self-questioning about its role as one of the world's largest religious institutions.
Now one thing to keep in mind as we listen; this series was prepared and first aired in 1984, which was before the allegations, charges and convictions of sexual abuse of minors by priests came to light.
With that in mind, listen to part one, called After Me, The Flood.
