The Los Angeles Kings have hired former NHL defenceman Rob Blake as assistant general manager.

Blake, who previously served in the league's department of player safety after playing 20 seasons, replaces Ron Hextall, who left to take the assistant GM position with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Blake will assist Dean Lombardi in hockey operations for the Kings and will also serve as GM of Los Angeles' AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs.

The Simcoe, Ont., native spent parts of 14 seasons with the Kings. He was a fourth-round pick in the 1988 draft and finished his career with 240 goals and 537 assists in 1,270 games.

The Kings also announced the signing of captain Dustin Brown to an eight-year contract extension, taking another step toward keeping their core intact.
