Canadian women's rugby team falls in Paris 7s semifinals
Men's squad advances to Cup quarter-finals
Canada's women's rugby sevens team lost in the semifinals to New Zealand 34-7 at the final tournament of the 2017-18 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Paris.
Bianca Farella's 100th career try was the lone consolation for the Canadians, who will finish outside of the top three in the overall Series standings for the first time ever.
Canada will play France for bronze on Sunday. The French, who lost to Australia in the other semifinal, guaranteed that Canada would miss the proverbial podium by virtue of reaching the semis. Australia clinched the overall Series title by reaching the final.
CBC Sports is live streaming both the men's and women's tournaments.
Earlier, the Canadians defeated the United States 26-24 in the quarter-finals. The Americans scored a last-second try to cut the lead to two, but failed to convert and force overtime.
Men's team reaches Cup quarter-finals
Canada's men's squad advanced to the Cup quarter-finals after finishing second in Pool B with a 2-1 record. The Canucks began their campaign with a resounding 33-7 win over Russia and a 26-14 victory over Scotland before being thumped 28-0 by South Africa in their final match of pool play.
South Africa, Canada, and Scotland were all tied atop Pool B with seven points apiece but Scotland was eliminated due to point differential.
The men's team plays Ireland next on Sunday at 4:35 a.m. ET.
