Atletico Madrid defeats Bayern Munich in semifinal
Bayern Munich lose their third consecutive Champions League semi-final
Bayern Munich fans made their way to southern Germany to support their team against La Liga powerhouse Atletico Madrid, looking for a needed win in the second leg of their semifinal. With the Spanish club's 1-0 victory in the first leg at home, it was sink or swim for Bayern Munich. While they were able to tread water for most of the match, Atletico Madrid ultimately sank their Champions League hopes.
But this game goes just beyond a regular 90 minute semifinal. It also came down to history for each side's coach:
Despite Bayern Munichs Pep Guardiola's soccer IQ and savvy coaching style, he has been unsuccessful in the Champions League tournament.

As for Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone, well, let's just say he has a lot to brag about after today.

Bayern Munich scored the first goal of the game to give German fans worldwide some extra hope. This goal marked the team's 11th first-half goal of its 12 home Champions League matches.

Minutes later things looked even better for Bayern as Gimenez was booked for tugging Martinez' shirt in the penalty box. But Muller was rejected by Oblak:
34 - SAVED! Oblak dives away to his right and gets both hands onto the ball to save Muller's penalty and then the rebound! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/UCL?src=hash">#UCL</a>

It wasn't until the second half that La Liga's top side was able to get on the scoreboard and lead the aggregate once again, 2-1.

Bayern needed to score two goals in 25 minutes. In a panic, fans pleaded to the Polish goal-scorer for help:
You scored 5 goals in 9 minutes, Lewandowski! Now we're just asking for ONE
—@gabryBoschetto
And he delivered.
The noise is deafening as <a href="https://twitter.com/lewy_official">@lewy_official</a> drags <a href="https://twitter.com/FCBayernEN">@FCBayernEN</a> back into the tie. 13 to go! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/FCBAtleti?src=hash">#FCBAtleti</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/UCL?src=hash">#UCL</a> <a href="https://t.co/7rfZa5duwV">pic.twitter.com/7rfZa5duwV</a>

What happened next? Fernando Torres was taken down in Bayern's penalty box and awarded the penalty kick. This time it was Neuer who rejected Torres.
SAVED! <a href="https://twitter.com/Torres">@Torres</a>' penalty saved by <a href="https://twitter.com/Manuel_Neuer">@Manuel_Neuer</a>, mid-height to his right - almost a carbon copy of <a href="https://twitter.com/esmuellert_">@esmuellert_</a>'s missed spot-kick. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/UCL?src=hash">#UCL</a>

In the midst of all the madness, other athletes and fans couldn't believe the series of events:
Wow now Torres misses a PK?!?! This game is crazy!!! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BayernVsAtletico?src=hash">#BayernVsAtletico</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ChampionsLeague?src=hash">#ChampionsLeague</a>

OMG Champions league and the DRAMA.....2 PKS IN A GAME AND 2 SAVES...IS THIS REAL LIFE???? I AM IN HEAVEN...

But it was Atletico who stayed strong and outlasted the German side. Fans were still in an uproar over the game:
What. A. Game. Both sides threw everything at each other but in the end it is <a href="https://twitter.com/atletienglish">@atletienglish</a> who prevail. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/UCL?src=hash">#UCL</a> <a href="https://t.co/CWQ3fTSOnG">pic.twitter.com/CWQ3fTSOnG</a>

That was a great game <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ChampionsLeague?src=hash">#ChampionsLeague</a> !!

Atletico's Diego Simeone can still make history in the final.
BTW... Every team that has eliminated Pep Guardiola teams, have won UCL <a href="https://twitter.com/Inter">@inter</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/ChelseaFC">@chelseafc</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/realmadrid">@realmadrid</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/FCBarcelona">@FCBarcelona</a>

And arguably had the play of the game:
