Andreescu will play at Australian Open after missing all of 2020 season

Bianca Andreescu intends to return to play at the Australian Open in January after sitting out 2020 with a left knee injury.

The 20-year-old Canadian, who won the U.S. Open in 2019, said she is in a good spot physically and personally.

"I'm doing really well. The virus kind of pushed me back, and some little personal things here and there, but right now I'm good, I'm training hard," she told Tennis Majors website. "I'm really looking forward to 2021. I'm perfectly healthy. I just really wanted to take time to build everything in my life, and I think this time off really helped me do that."

She hasn't played since the WTA Finals in China last fall where she suffering a knee injury. She also skipped the U.S. Open in New York, calling it a "difficult" decision.

Andreescu won the 2019 U.S. Open over Serena Williams, becoming the first Canadian to win a singles Grand Slam.

Andreescu also won major events in Toronto and Indian Wells, Calif., last year as she reached No. 4 in the WTA rankings. She is currently at No. 7 despite her long period of inactivity.

Because of accounting changes made in the wake of the pandemic, she remains world No. 7 despite her absence from the WTA Tour.
