Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray announced on Monday that he has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto.

The No. 2-ranked tennis player has participated in the tournament every year since 2006. The 2016 version of the event was set to begin on Saturday.

Scotland's Murray has won the Rogers Cup title three times but said in a statement that he opted to pull out due to lack of rest between tournaments.

"My body needs some recovery time after reaching the latter stages of tournaments over the past few months," Murray said in statement released by Tennis Canada. "I'm sorry to my fans in Toronto but I look forward to being back in Canada next year."

Murray defeated Milos Raonic, of Thornhill, Ont., in the 2016 Wimbledon final on July 10.
