Zhao advances in Wimbledon qualifying for Canada, teammate Bouchard loses in straight sets
Andreescu, Marino knocked out of tournaments in Germany and England
Canada's Carol Zhao beat Britain's Emily Appleton 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying play at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Zhao, ranked 166 in the world, will face Arantxa Rus in the next round. The Dutch player is seeded second in the qualifying draw and beat Daria Snigur to advance.
Rus, ranked No. 85 in the world, previously reached Wimbledon's third round in 2012.
Eugenie Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., lost 4-6, 5-7 to Belgian Greet Minnen in qualifying play.
Bouchard memorably made the Wimbledon finals in 2014, falling to Petra Kvitova.
Toronto's Katherine Sebov, the final Canadian in the women's qualifying draw, will face off against Brenda Fruhvirtova, from Czechia, on Wednesday. Montreal's Gabriel Diallo will meet Italy's Matteo Gigante in a men's qualifier.
Masarova rules on 1st serve vs. Andreescu
Bianca Andreescu was knocked out of the Bad Homburg Open, losing 3-6, 2-6 to Spain's Rebeka Masarova on Tuesday in the round of 16.
Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ont., had one ace but struggled on her winning percentage from her first serve in Germany.
Masarova dominated in that regard, with a 92 per cent winning percentage.

Andreescu was the tournament's fifth seed.
Meanwhile, Vancouver's Rebecca Marino lost to China's Xiyu Wang 4-6, 2-6 at the Eastbourne International at the Devonshire Park Lawn Club in England.
Marino had made the round of 32 by virtue of being the "lucky loser," which is where an eliminated player advances after a winner withdraws from the competition.
