Sydney teen dies after crash on Highway 105

A teenaged girl involved in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 105 in Cape Breton Monday morning has died from her injuries.

A teenaged girl hurt in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 105 in Cape Breton Monday morning has died from her injuries.   

Police have identified her as Jillian Whelan, 16, from Sydney, N.S.

Around 3:40 Monday morning, RCMP Cape Breton Traffic Services responded to a serious crash on Highway 105 in Dalem Lake, just west of St. James Road.   

Police say the car, heading east, went off the road onto the shoulder. The driver lost control, overcorrecting and crossing into the westbound lane, with the car finally rolling over in the ditch.   

Whelan and the driver, a 17-year-old girl, were taken to hospital in Sydney by emergency services. 

Whelan was then transported to hospital in Halifax by air ambulance.   

Highway 105 was closed for three hours while RCMP collision analysts examined the scene.   

The accident is still under investigation.
