Movember kid draws moustache to fight cancer

Jackson McLean doesn't even have peach fuzz on his face, but the 11-year-old Ottawa student proudly sports a moustache every day to participate in the Movember campaign to raise funds to battle prostate cancer.

Jackson, who attends Pleasant Park Public School in south Ottawa, says on his Movember Canada page that he's "too young to grow a moustache. So, I draw one on every day to help raise money for cancer. I would really like it if you helped me."  

As of 2:21 p.m. ET Friday, the youngster had raised $455.  

Jackson told CBC News this week that when he asked his mother if he could paint a moustache on to play hockey, she encouraged him to get involved in Movember.  

She also donated her black makeup pencil for him to use to draw his fu manchu and other moustache designs. One picture in his photo gallery on his website shows him with a full-fledged goatee.

Friends 'enthusiastic'

Jackson says his friends have become loyal supporters of his moving moustache efforts.

"Well, my friends are very enthusiastic ... they weren't laughing about it, but I'm sure they thought it was funny.    

"I think it's important to donate because you're just helping out people who are in need ... maybe buying medicine."

Each Nov. 1, men around the world, supported by their partners, register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face.

For the rest of the month, the so-called Mo Bros "groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery," and raise awareness about men's health issues, Movember Canada says.

"Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men's health," it adds.

At the end of November, Mo Bros and their partners either throw their own Movember party or attend one of the many gala parties around the world.
