Police seek identity of deceased man found in Junction Creek
Post-mortem examination was conducted Monday in Sudbury
Sudbury police say they have yet to identify a body found in Sudbury's Junction creek on Saturday evening.
A post-mortem examination was conducted Monday in Sudbury, but police said it did not identify a cause of death. Investigators are still waiting for results of the toxicology testing.
Police describe the deceased as follows:
- Male
- 30 – 50 years of age
- 5'5" tall
- 160 pounds
- Shoulder length thick black hair
- Some upper teeth missing
Police were expected to complete their search in the area of Junction Creek on Monday afternoon. Their investigation is being conducted under the jurisdiction of Coroner Dr. Raymond Bohdan Sawkiw.
The body was extracted from the creek on Sunday, according to Dave Cameron, who's the regional supervising coroner for the northeastern region.
Cameron said the body does not show any signs of foul play or obvious natural disease.
"I think the public can be a little bit reassured that, at least at this point, there's no indication that this was from trauma or homicide," said Cameron, adding that police have not concluded their investigation on the scene.
Cameron said the man was found in half a metre of water with his body well-preserved. Contrary to witness reports, Cameron says the body was intact. He estimates the body could have been in the creek anywhere from a few weeks to the entire winter.
Cameron said it could be weeks before the man's autopsy results are released. Even then, he said the exact cause of death may never be known.
Police are asking anyone who may know the identity of the deceased person to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 705-675-9171 ext. 2300 or at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS.
