The nation's fathers prepare for disappointment
Fathers from coast to coast to coast are preparing to have their second-to-mother status thrust in their face this weekend as Father's Day is celebrated. Many anticipate receiving black socks or neckties, items seemingly selected to intentionally mock their sense of fashion style.
But according to Because News host Gavin Crawford, these fathers could be the lucky ones.
"In an article from the U.K. Mirror, one in three fathers can expect to get what as a gift?" Crawford asked panellists on this week's news quiz, Because News.
"Disappointment?" quipped Big Brother Canada Host Arisa Cox.
Although she may have been alluding to the unfulfilled expectations of the nation's dads, she was very close to the truth. According to the newspaper, one out of three fathers will receive nothing.
But perhaps this is an example where nothing is better than something. Tools will continue to be a popular gift, highlighting the modern Dad's complete failure as a Mr. Fixit. Screwdriver sets, power saws and electric drills will only reinforce expectations of their ability to perform household repair and then be placed in basements where they will lie unused, dusty and provoking shame.
With Father's Day in mind, our panellists attempted this week's hashtag game: #DadLit. Play along on Twitter by combining a popular novel with the qualities of our fathers. Here are a few to get you going.
