Q Essay: A tribute to the Tiananmen Square 'tank man'
Jian dedicates his opening essay to a small, anonymous figure who unknowingly shaped the world's view.
June 4, 1989 is remembered around the world as the day the People's Liberation Army opened fire on unarmed protesters in Tienanmen Square. On the 25th anniversary of that deadly day, Jian dedicates his opening essay to "tank man" -- the anonymous yet iconic figure who dared to defy the iron fist.
"Without a name or a background tale, he is more than just one person. He is strength. He is courage. He is fear, hope, power and confusion, commitment and understanding. Integrity. Dissent," says Jian. "He is another China. He is humanity."
