"Our Polytechechnique 25th anniversary coverage underlines why we must never forget the events of that day, nor the lives of each of the 14 women who died. You can't call up one of their photos and stories without feeling a deep sense of loss and what might have been," said CBC Montreal managing editor Helen Evans.
The CBC Montreal online team produced an interactive that highlighted the lives lost and encouraged conversation on social media around #RememberThe14. The interactive featured a collection of information about each victim and archival footage from their friends or family members discussing their lives.
"We also wanted the experience to reflect the collective sorrow of such a poignant moment in our history and look at how such savage scars heal with the passage of time. We reached out to our greater community to populate much of the content," explained online journalist Melinda Dalton.
